And the only sound you ever heard from
him was this kind of bizarrely triumphant
'yippee' sound that he would make on
occasions at the end of a race when the
horse racing was on the television.

The locals called him the 'Rain Man' after
Dustin Hoffman's character in the movie,
based on his unusual appearance and
strange mannerisms. I assumed that this
was something he didn't know about. But
more about that later.

Then one day I decided

to strike up a

conversation with this

guy. It would be the

day that changed my

life.

He was watching the racing at the
time. A race had just finished and as
was his way he'd let out that
delighted little 'yelp' that he seemed
to let out on a regular basis.
